DAILY ENCOURAGEMENT

Thou Openest Thine Hand

Two sparrows drinking at a limestone birdbath among olive leaves and roses in warm morning light.

“Thou openest thine hand, and satisfiest the desire of every living thing.”

Psalm 145:16 · KJV

Be Still

Before we count what the day will require, we may pause to notice what has already been given. A breath. Water. Food placed before us. The life of a small bird among the branches. These ordinary things can become occasions for worship when we remember the One from whom life comes.

Come, and linger over this small phrase: “Thou openest thine hand.”

Behold Him

Psalm 145 is a song of praise. In the verses surrounding this jewel, the Lord upholds those who fall, raises those bowed down, and gives His creatures food in season. The psalmist looks across the living world and turns its dependence into worship. Every creature needs what it cannot finally supply for itself.

The picture is simple: an open hand. The Lord is praised as the sustainer of life, attentive to needs far beyond our own. Even the smallest living thing belongs within this song. His greatness does not keep Him from caring for what is small.

This is not a formula promising that every personal wish will be granted. The surrounding verses honor His righteousness and call us to seek Him in truth. Here we behold the Creator’s generous care, and our place among those who depend upon Him.

What Does This Reveal About God’s Heart?

There is tenderness in provision. To give food in season is to attend to life as it is lived—life that hungers, waits, receives, and needs again. We do not outgrow our need for the Lord. We may learn, instead, to recognize His gifts with gratitude.

The open hand invites our attention beyond the gift to the Giver. What do you notice about Him as you read these words slowly? Allow that question to remain before you in prayer.

The Holy Place

Bring both your gratitude and your need. Neither must be hidden. We can thank the Lord for today’s bread while praying for those whose tables are empty. Beholding His generosity can also make room for a quiet question: is there something in our hands that we can share?

Take a moment with the whole passage, Psalm 145:14–21. Notice the movement from dependence to praise. There is room here to receive, to ask, and to bless His holy name.

A Worshipful Prayer

Father, we worship You as the giver and sustainer of life. Forgive us for passing over Your daily gifts as though they came without Your care. Open our eyes to the goodness we have ceased to notice. Receive our thanks for food, water, shelter, and the many kindnesses through which we are sustained.

We bring You the needs still before us, and the needs of those who have too little. Provide for the hungry. Strengthen those who serve them. Make us willing to share what we have received. Let our gratitude become love in practice, and let every gift turn our hearts toward You. In Yeshua’s name, Amen.

A Stone of Remembrance

“Thou openest thine hand.” Today, we pause to remember the Giver.
