“and began to wash the disciples’ feet”
John 13:5, KJV · excerpt
Be Still
Let the sound of water poured into a basin quiet our hurried thoughts. Before we reach for another task, let us behold the hands of Yeshua. The Lord of glory has taken a towel.
Behold Him
John tells us that Jesus knew the Father had given all things into His hands. With that knowledge, He rose from supper, laid aside His garments, and began to wash His disciples’ feet. His humility was not uncertainty about who He was. He served as their Lord and Master. Read John 13:1–17.
Peter struggled to receive this care. The One he honored was doing something he could scarcely bear to accept. Yet Jesus made clear that Peter needed to receive His washing. Before the disciples could follow His example, they had to let their Lord minister to them.
What Does This Reveal About God’s Heart?
In Yeshua, we behold a greatness that is unafraid of humble service. He does not need to keep His distance to preserve His dignity. His holiness draws near with purposeful love.
The basin brings that love into an ordinary, physical need. Dusty feet are not beneath His notice. There is tenderness here for the person who finds it easier to give than to receive, easier to stay useful than to admit a need. We may come before Him without a task in our hands. We may be loved before we have accomplished anything more.
This scene also changes how we see service. After washing their feet, Jesus calls His disciples to do for one another what He has done for them. The towel becomes an invitation to love without needing the highest place. A quiet act of care can bear the likeness of our Lord.
The Holy Place
Stay beside this basin for a moment. Notice the towel, the water, the willing hands. Let gratitude rise before resolve. Our response begins with wonder: You, our Master, have loved us this closely.
From that wonder, we can ask whom we might serve today. Not to earn His affection, and not to prove we are indispensable, but because we have first received His love.
Worshipful Prayer
Yeshua, our Lord and Master, we worship You in Your beautiful humility. Thank You for love that does not remain at a distance. You know our need, and You are not ashamed to draw near.
Teach us to receive from You. Where pride makes us resist help, soften us. Where weariness has made every kindness feel like another obligation to repay, let us receive with simple gratitude. Cleanse our hearts and make us willing to be cared for.
Then place Your tenderness in our hands. Help us notice the small needs around us and answer them with love. Free our service from resentment, comparison, and the hunger to be seen. May the way we care for one another make Your goodness visible.
We love You, Yeshua. Keep the towel and the basin before our hearts as we walk through this day. In Your gentle and holy name, Amen.
My Stone of Remembrance: I receive the love of my Lord, and from His love I learn to serve.
