“And the LORD God planted a garden”

Genesis 2:8, KJV · excerpt

Before Adam tended the garden, the Lord planted it. Before there was work for human hands, there was a gift from the hand of God.

Genesis describes trees that were pleasing to the sight and good for food, and a river watering the garden. The man God had formed was placed within this living provision. There would be work to do and a command to honor, but the garden itself began in the generosity of its Maker. Read Genesis 2:8–17.

Pause beside that little word: planted.

The Lord who spoke the heavens into being also prepared a place where life could be nourished. His creation held both usefulness and beauty. Food for hunger. Water for the garden. Trees lovely enough to make a person stop and look.

We can become so occupied with what needs doing that we forget how much we have already received. A breath. A meal. The shade of a tree. Someone’s kindness. These ordinary gifts can become small invitations to worship when we remember the Giver.

Father, what goodness there is in Your heart.

Adam’s tending would matter. Yet he would care for something God had already given. There is a gentleness in letting that order reach our own hearts. We can begin today with gratitude, receiving life from the Lord before measuring ourselves by what we accomplish.

Eden belongs to the beginning of Scripture’s story, before humanity’s rebellion. Our present world carries grief and hardship that were not part of that garden’s goodness. Still, its beauty tells us something true about the Creator: He delights in giving life a place to flourish.

In your BEHOLD journey, linger here with Him. Notice one small kindness today and let your thanks become personal. Then care tenderly for what has been entrusted to you—a task, a home, a relationship, a growing thing.

And lift your eyes to Yeshua. As His disciples faced His departure, He told them He was going to prepare a place for them, so they could be where He is. Our deepest hope is a home with Him. Read John 14:1–3.

The God who planted a garden has not lost His heart for welcoming His people.

A Prayer

Abba Father, thank You for the tenderness revealed in the garden You planted. Open my eyes to Your gifts, especially the quiet ones I hurry past. Let gratitude interrupt my striving and wonder soften my heart.

Teach me to care well for what You have placed in my hands. May my work grow out of love for You, and may the people around me taste something of Your generosity through my words and actions.

Yeshua, thank You for preparing a place for Your people. Keep my heart turned toward You, until the day I am at home in Your presence.

In Yeshua’s holy, beautiful, wonderful, powerful name, Amen.

My Stone of Remembrance: His care was there before our work began.
