“The LORD will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O LORD, endureth for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands.”
Psalm 138:8 · KJV
Be Still
There are places in our lives that still look unfinished—prayers still forming, healing still unfolding, and callings whose full shape we cannot yet see. Into those places, David speaks with quiet confidence: “The LORD will perfect that which concerneth me.”
Psalm 138 does not rise from a life without trouble. David remembers crying to the Lord and being strengthened in his soul. He speaks of walking in the midst of trouble and of the Lord stretching forth His hand to save. Then, with the unfinished road still before him, David rests his hope in the God whose mercy endures forever.
Behold Him
Behold the Lord who does not begin carelessly and then turn away. He remains present with the work of His hands. What concerns His child is not beneath His notice, and what He purposes is not forgotten midway.
The word perfect here carries the sense of bringing something to completion—accomplishing what remains and fulfilling His faithful purpose. This is not a promise that every plan we make will unfold exactly as we imagine. It is an invitation to trust that Jehovah knows how to finish what belongs to His will.
Like a patient weaver, He sees more than the loose threads nearest our eyes. We may notice interruptions, knots, and spaces where the pattern has not yet appeared. He sees the whole work. His wisdom knows where every thread belongs, and His mercy does not run out before the weaving is complete.
What Does This Reveal About God’s Heart?
It reveals a heart that is steadfast toward the lowly. Earlier in the psalm, David declares that though the Lord is high, He has regard for the lowly. His greatness does not make Him distant from the humble heart. He hears the cry, strengthens the soul, revives His servant in trouble, and continues the work mercy began.
David’s final words—“forsake not the works of thine own hands”—are both prayer and surrender. He does not claim control over the outcome. He places himself in the hands of the Maker. The One who formed him is the One he trusts to sustain him.
In Yeshua, we behold this faithful heart drawing near. He does not abandon His people when growth is slow or the road is difficult. He calls us to remain in Him, receive His life, and trust the Father’s care as obedience takes shape one day at a time.
The Holy Place
Today, bring the unfinished places into the light of His presence. You do not have to pull every thread into place by your own strength. You do not have to force an answer simply because waiting feels uncomfortable.
Ask what faithfulness looks like for this day, and leave tomorrow’s portion with Him. The Weaver has not stepped away from the loom. The pattern may still be hidden, but His mercy is still moving through the work.
Let the soul rest in this assurance: Jehovah is not confused by the middle of the story. He knows the beginning, the purpose, and the faithful completion. What He asks from us is trust, nearness, and the next obedient step.
A Worshipful Prayer
Jehovah, faithful Maker, we worship You. Thank You that Your mercy does not expire while our lives are still being formed. You see every unfinished place, every unanswered question, and every thread we cannot yet understand.
Keep us from grasping for control or calling the work abandoned simply because it is incomplete. Give us grace for the middle, courage for the next step, and patience to remain near You. Complete what belongs to Your purpose, and gently remove what does not.
Yeshua, teach us to abide rather than strive. Strengthen our souls as You strengthened David’s. When we walk in the midst of trouble, revive us. Let Your enduring mercy become the golden thread running through every season of our lives.
We place ourselves again in Your hands. Do not forsake the work You have made; shape it for Your glory and let our lives become a testimony to Your faithfulness. Through Yeshua, our faithful Savior, amen.
A Stone of Remembrance
The Lord has not abandoned the unfinished places. His mercy endures, and He is faithful to complete what belongs to His purpose.
