Come and Dine

Bread and fish beside glowing coals on a sunlit Galilee shore, with a fishing boat and net behind.

“Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine.”

John 21:12, KJV · excerpt

Be Still

Before we hurry into the needs of another day, let us linger beside the shore. There is warmth here. There is bread. And there is the voice of Yeshua, inviting His disciples to receive what He has prepared.

Behold Him

John places this breakfast after the resurrection. Seven disciples have spent the night fishing without a catch. When morning comes, Jesus stands on the shore. At His direction they cast the net again, and it fills with fish. They recognize Him and make their way to land.

There they find a charcoal fire, fish, and bread. Jesus asks them to bring some of their catch. Then He invites them to eat, taking the bread and giving it to them, and the fish likewise. Read John 21:1–19.

How quietly beautiful this moment is. The risen Lord makes Himself known in the sharing of a morning meal. We can pause over the bread in His hands and the simple kindness of His invitation.

What Does This Reveal About God’s Heart?

His love reaches into ordinary human need. Hunger matters to Him. Tired bodies matter. Fellowship matters. We sometimes hurry past these small mercies while searching for something we consider more spiritual. Yet here is Jesus, risen from the dead, giving His friends something to eat.

Lord, teach us to notice You in such tenderness.

For those accustomed to giving, receiving can feel unfamiliar. We know how to pray for someone, prepare a meal, answer a call, or meet a need. This passage gives us room to be among those who are fed. We may come to Christ with our need still visible. We may receive care with gratitude, without making our usefulness the measure of our worth.

Beholding Christ

After breakfast, Jesus speaks with Peter about love and entrusts him with the care of His sheep. Peter will have work to do and a costly path to walk. But let us notice the order of this morning: he receives a meal from Jesus before he hears the call to feed others.

We can let that scene shape the way we serve. We belong to the Savior whose compassion we hope to share. In prayer, in Scripture, and through the kindness of people He places beside us, we can receive before we rush onward. Love received can become a patient word, a shared meal, or a little more gentleness toward the person before us.

Today, give thanks for one ordinary kindness. Allow yourself to receive it. Let it turn your heart toward the One whose invitation is so tender: Come and dine.

Worshipful Prayer

Yeshua, how beautiful is Your heart. Thank You for the breakfast on the shore, for bread shared with Your disciples, and for love expressed in such simple care.

Help us receive Your kindness today. Where we have measured ourselves only by what we can give, teach us the quiet joy of belonging to You. Open our eyes to the mercies we overlook. Give us gratitude for food, friendship, rest, and the presence of those who care.

As You nourish our hearts through Your Word, make us tender toward others. Let our service grow from fellowship with You. May someone taste Your goodness through the welcome we offer and the attention we give.

In Yeshua’s holy and beautiful name, Amen.

My Stone of Remembrance: The risen Lord’s love is tender enough to serve breakfast.
