Matthew 25:1–13
“Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom.”
Matthew 25:1
There is a warning in this parable that the Church cannot afford to ignore.
Jesus did not tell this story to frighten people into religion. He told it to awaken people into readiness.
Ten virgins were waiting for the Bridegroom.
All ten had lamps.
All ten knew the Bridegroom was coming.
All ten went out to meet Him.
All ten became sleepy.
But when the midnight cry came, only five were ready.
Why?
Because there was something five possessed that the other five could not obtain at the last moment.
🕯️ They Had Oil
The frightening part of this parable is that the foolish virgins were not outsiders.
They were waiting too.
They had lamps too.
They knew the language of expectation.
They were in the right company.
They were looking in the right direction.
But they had neglected the one thing they could not afford to neglect.
They had no oil.
And when the cry came:
“Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!”
Matthew 25:6
They suddenly realized their deficiency.
They said:
“Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.”
Matthew 25:8
But the answer was devastating:
“Since there will not be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.”
Matthew 25:9
There are things in the Christian life that can be shared.
A Bible can be shared.
A testimony can be shared.
A sermon can be shared.
A song can be shared.
A seat in church can be shared.
But your personal walk with God cannot be borrowed.
Your prayer life cannot be borrowed.
Your obedience cannot be borrowed.
Your intimacy with the Holy Spirit cannot be borrowed.
Your consecration cannot be borrowed.
Your oil cannot be borrowed.
🌿 There comes a moment when borrowed faith is exposed.
🔥 The Danger of Having a Lamp Without Oil
A lamp speaks of outward testimony.
Oil speaks of the inward reality.
You can carry the appearance of Christianity while the inner life is becoming empty.
You can know worship songs without knowing the Presence.
You can know Scripture without surrendering to the God of Scripture.
You can attend church and still neglect the secret place.
You can speak about revival while your own altar has grown cold.
This is why Paul warned:
“Having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power.”
2 Timothy 3:5
The issue is not merely:
“Do you have a lamp?”
The deeper question is:
“Is there oil in your lamp?”
The Lord is not looking merely for people who look ready.
He is looking for people who are ready.
🕊️ The Oil Speaks of a Life Surrendered to God
Throughout Scripture, oil is associated with anointing and consecration.
David was anointed with oil, and Scripture says:
“And the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon David from that day forward.”
1 Samuel 16:13
The power is not in the physical substance of oil.
The deeper revelation is this:
God desires the reality behind the symbol.
He wants a heart that says:
“Lord, I am Yours.”
“Lord, search me.”
“Lord, correct me.”
“Lord, cleanse me.”
“Lord, use me.”
“Lord, whatever You ask, I surrender.”
That kind of life cannot be manufactured at midnight.
It is cultivated in the secret place.
🌿 Oil is built in hidden places before it is seen in public places.
⚠️ Midnight Will Reveal What Daytime Hides
Jesus said:
“But at midnight there was a cry, ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’”
Matthew 25:6
Midnight represents the unexpected hour.
The hour when preparation can no longer be postponed.
The hour when excuses disappear.
The hour when the difference between appearance and reality becomes visible.
The foolish virgins did not suddenly become foolish at midnight.
Their foolishness was revealed at midnight.
They had been unprepared long before the cry came.
And this is the warning for us:
Do not wait for the crisis to begin praying.
Do not wait for tragedy to seek God.
Do not wait until your family is falling apart before building an altar.
Do not wait until temptation comes before learning obedience.
Do not wait until the trumpet sounds before asking whether your heart truly belongs to Christ.
🔥 Prepare before the midnight cry.
🕯️ “Our Lamps Are Going Out”
Notice their words.
They did not say:
“Our lamps are already gone.”
They said:
“Our lamps are going out.”
There was still a lamp.
There was still a flame.
But there was no reserve.
This is a solemn picture of spiritual exhaustion.
You can continue functioning outwardly while your inner fire is dying.
You can continue preaching while losing intimacy.
You can continue singing while losing tenderness toward God.
You can continue serving while neglecting the One you serve.
And Jesus’ warning is not:
“Work harder.”
It is:
Be ready.
Return to the secret place.
Return to prayer.
Return to the Word.
Return to obedience.
Return to wholehearted surrender.
🚨 The Door Will Not Remain Open Forever
The parable ends with one of the most sobering statements Jesus ever gave:
“And the door was shut.”
Matthew 25:10
Then the foolish virgins came saying:
“Lord, lord, open to us.”
But the answer was:
“Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.”
Matthew 25:11–12
And Jesus concludes:
“Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.”
Matthew 25:13
This is not a call to calculate dates.
It is a call to live prepared.
Jesus is coming.
The question is not whether we can predict the hour.
The question is whether we are spiritually awake when the hour comes.
🔥 You Cannot Borrow Someone Else’s Fire
You cannot borrow your mother’s prayer life.
You cannot borrow your father’s faith.
You cannot borrow your pastor’s anointing.
You cannot borrow your church’s revival.
You cannot borrow another believer’s intimacy with Jesus.
There must be a personal encounter.
A personal surrender.
A personal obedience.
A personal relationship with Christ.
Paul wrote:
“Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith.”
2 Corinthians 13:5
That is a question worth asking when nobody else is watching.
Is my lamp burning?
Is my heart awake?
Do I still love Jesus when there is no audience?
Would I still follow Him if there were no applause?
🌿 The End-Time Church Must Wake Up
We do not need more religious noise.
We need oil.
We do not need merely bigger crowds.
We need deeper surrender.
We do not need merely impressive platforms.
We need holy lives.
We do not need Christians who only know how to talk about Jesus.
We need disciples who know Jesus.
Jesus said:
“Abide in me, and I in you.”
John 15:4
Abiding cannot be delegated.
Nobody can abide in Christ for you.
Nobody can pray your prayers for you.
Nobody can surrender your heart for you.
Nobody can keep your lamp filled for you.
The oil cannot be borrowed.
🕊️ A Final Call to the Heart
Maybe your lamp has grown dim.
Maybe your prayer life has become dry.
Maybe the things of this world have slowly crowded Christ out.
Maybe you have been serving God publicly while secretly becoming empty.
Then hear the mercy of God:
Come back.
The warning of Matthew 25 is not merely about judgment.
It is also an invitation to wake up before it is too late.
“Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”
Ephesians 5:14
Return to the altar.
Return to the Word.
Return to prayer.
Return to obedience.
Return to Jesus.
🌿 Keep oil in your lamp.
🔥 Keep your heart awake.
🕯️ Keep looking for the Bridegroom.
Because one day the cry will come:
“The Bridegroom is here.”
And on that day, borrowed oil will not be enough.
🙏 Prayer
Lord Jesus, awaken Your Church.
Search our hearts and expose everything that has replaced You.
Forgive us for every season of spiritual negligence.
Restore the altar of prayer.
Restore hunger for Your Word.
Restore holiness.
Restore the fear of the Lord.Teach us to live prepared—not in fear, but in faith; not in religious appearance, but in genuine surrender.
Let our lamps burn brightly.
Let our lives point people to Christ. And when the midnight cry comes, may we be found watching, waiting, faithful, and ready.
Come, Holy Spirit. Keep the fire burning. Keep the oil in our lamps. Keep our hearts fixed upon Jesus.
In the mighty name of Jesus Christ.
Amen. 🕊️🔥
💭 Engaging Question
If Jesus came tonight, would He find your lamp burning—or would you discover that you have been depending on someone else’s oil?
